Troubleshooting: Solid Fuel

If you’re burning wood, wood fuel is more difficult to get to burn for a longer period of time.

It is possible to get your stove to burn for a longer period of time. Firstly, refuel with the maximum allowable fuel load. You can then burn the new fuel at a high temperature for a few minutes before shutting down the primary air control and adjusting the Airwash control to the low combustion settings – see the User Instructions section in your instruction manual supplied with your stove on how to do this. This running condition will gradually blacken the glass which should clear when the air controls are opened up again.

If using solid fuel, firstly, empty the ashpan prior to refuelling, then burn the new fuel at a high temperature for a few minutes before adjusting the Primary Air Control. Finally, set the air controls to low combustion settings. This running condition will gradually blacken the glass but it will clear when the air controls are opened up again.

If your flames are dying out too quickly, it is most likely that insufficient heat is being generated quickly enough to get the chimney working.

  1. Ensure that the fire is being lit correctly using paper and/ or firelighters and plenty of kindling up to larger pieces of wood until a good fire is established. Refer to the User Instructions section in your instruction manual. Or check out our how to video guides above.

If the fire slows down immediately when the door is shut, this problem is most likely caused by insufficient air being drawn into the stove to maintain combustion.

  1. The Running of the Appliance varies depending on the fuel burnt (Wood/ Solid Mineral Fuel). Ensure that all the air controls are being operated correctly for the type of fuel. Leaving the appliance door slightly open may help, but make sure that the door is closed when the fire has established. Please refer to the User Instructions section in your instruction manual supplied with your stove on Lighting and Running the Appliance.
  2. There may be not be enough flue pull, due to: inadequate Chimney height and/ or Chimney size and/or ventilation. Try opening a door or window to the outside until the fire has established properly.

If the fire does not slow down after the door is shut, too much large fuel maybe added on top of a new firebed.

  1. Ensure that the correct size fuel is used. Small pieces will light quicker. Large pieces will take longer to light and may smother the fire.
  2. The Running of the Appliance varies depending on the fuel burnt (Wood/ Solid Mineral Fuel). Ensure that all the air controls are being operated correctly for the type of fuel. Leaving the appliance door slightly open may help, but make sure that the door is closed when the fire has established. Please refer to the User Instructions section in your instruction manual supplied with your stove for Information on Lighting and Running the Appliance.
  3. There may be not be enough flue pull, due to inadequate Chimney height and/ or Chimney size and/or ventilation. Try opening a door or window to the outside until the fire has established properly.

If your stove does not respond to the operation of the air controls and is too vigorous, the problem is most likely caused by too much air being drawn into the stove, making it burn too fast.

  1. The Running of the Appliance varies depending on the fuel burnt (Wood/ Solid Mineral Fuel). Ensure that all the air controls are being operated correctly for the type of fuel. Leaving the appliance door slightly open may help, but make sure that the door is closed when the fire has established. Please refer to the User Instructions section in your instruction manual supplied.
  2. Check the condition of the rope seal in the door. If this has become worn or loose, then additional air will be entering the fire. When the door is shut on a piece of paper you should be able to feel a resistance when pulling the paper through the seal. If in doubt, replace the door seal and check the door seal performance using the paper test.
  3. Another possibility is that the chimney pull is just too strong. The chimney pull can be checked by the installer to ensure that it does not exceed the maximum stated in the installation instructions located within your instruction manual. Chimney pull can change temporarily due to high wind speeds in stormy weather. Chimney pull can be reduced by fitting a suitable cowl or a draught stabiliser.

If your fire is sluggish, the problem is most likely caused by insufficient air being drawn into the stove to maintain combustion.

  2. It could be that the chimney size and or height, or the ventilation into the room is inadequate to get the flow up the chimney started. Try opening a door or window to outside until the fire has established properly.
